Essay:

To different extents, teachers and parents share responsibility for the education and socialization of children. Relatively speaking, while teachers have a bigger impact on children’s intellectual development, parents play a more influential role in children’s social development.

On the one hand, teachers are in school to help children succeed academically, and here lies teachers’ influence. Teachers keep children focused on study and, as a result, have more influence on their intellectual development in school than parents do at home. It is because a child (aged 5-11) is now moving into a stage of incredible intellectual growth where teaching effectiveness is critical. Although children may spend more time with parents, teachers may spend quality time on helping children with learning to read and write and do mathematics, as well as learning about the world outside the comfort of family life under the protection of their parents. In this respect, the effectiveness of school programs is closely tied to teachers’ influence on children. Teachers’ influence is so important that ineffective teaching may actually have a negative effect on children’s academic achievement. That is to say, children’s academic performance is a sign of effective teaching rather than a sigh of great parenting.

On the other hand, parents are the key elements in the social development of young children, as early as first grade, or earlier. In other words, children usually rely more on parents than teachers when it comes to acquiring good social behaviors outside school. Parents are the ultimate role models to their children whose social behaviors would be developed with observation of their parents’ social behaviors. For that matter, the desired social behaviors are taught through a variety of accumulating experiences stemming from parents’ influence rather than teachers’ influence. Actually, every word, movement or action from parents has an effect on children who observe the practical behaviors towards different people relating to their social circle, and they learn the same and do the same in their upcoming life. Compared to teachers, therefore, parents have more power to influence the social lives of their children.

In conclusion, teachers join forces with parents in influencing the intellectual and social development of children. Regarding the impact on children, it is a matter of degrees since these two influences are not mutually exclusive.
