1.Advertising discourages people from being different individuals by making us want to be and to look the same. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Band 7.5
A debated topic is whether advertising has a major influence on the growing similarity of people’s lifestyle in the modern world. Personally, I partly agree with this opinion for a number of reasons.
On the one hand, the power of advertising is undeniable. The growth of the advertising industry has resulted in many people buying products of the same manufacture, which can be seen in the case of consumer goods. Today, the advertising campaigns of multinational companies such as Unilever have been so successful that their products almost dominate the market. Smaller enterprises tend not to be able to compete with these giant market leaders due to their disadvantages of capital poured into advertising programs. Thus, costumers are often swayed to buy products of famous brands rather than those made by less well-known companies.
On the other hand, it is also true that people have the tendency to copy others’ lifestyles without being affected by advertising. For example, it is valid to argue that many young people are trying to emulate the fashion styles of their idols. Many Chinese youths manage to purchase the same clothes, dye their hair and wear the same perfume as their stars do. People can also turn to their social relations for advice when they need to buy something. For instance, junior citizens usually ask their friends before they come to a final decision on buying a smart phone.
In conclusion, it is true that advertising has bridged the gap between each individual’s lifestyle in modern society. However, I believe that it is not the sole factor that contributes to the trend.
2.Although more and more people read the news on internet, newspapers will remain the most important source of news for the majority of people. Do you agree or disagree? Band 7
There is a common belief that newspapers will still be the most vital means of reading news despite the innovation that the Internet has brought to the information provision process. Personally, I disagree with this view.
At the outset, I admit that newspapers may remain as the most popular source of information for certain parts of society. Take the senior citizens as a salient example. Journals were present on virtually every corner of the world a few decades ago, and the unremitting availability of this type of publication shaped a long-lasting reading habit among the previous generation. This explains why those individuals are not willing to change their way of accessing information. In addition, to the understanding of some people, the information published by newspapers is better censored. This view is, to some extent, justifiable due to the fact that the majority of websites and social networks are open for all members to post about their opinions, creating a chaotic influx of online information.
However, from my perspective, it is not reasonable to state that most people will consider newspapers their primary means of reading news in the future. At its simplest, the Internet has revolutionised the way we are exposed to information, and how online platforms place the entire world at our fingertips is simply superior to the way gazettes or broadsheets provide us with daily news every morning. To exemplify, an online newspaper can publish vivid live reports of events or football matches, while traditional newspapers only supply brief summaries of such occasions on the following day. Plus, the audience, with an Internet-connected device, is allowed to access news under the form of video clips, which are by no means available on newspapers.
All the aforementioned points lead me to a firm conclusion that the Internet will replace the newspapers as the most important source of news in the foreseeable future.
3. Advertisements are becoming more and more common in everyday life. Is it positive or negative development? Band 7.5
Advertising is gaining more popularity in the marketing of products or services. While advertisements are considered to be advantageous, they can have numerous negative influences.
It is unquestionable that there are several benefits of advertising. By dint of the large- scale expansion of advertising in almost every kind of mass media and nearly all hoardings, this sector is likely to generate a diversity of employment opportunities. In other words, it provides occupations for artists, painters or copywriters in designing and preparing logos, contents or ideas for advertisements. Another advantage is that advertising may enable the massages involved in products and services to reach potential customers, followed by an increase in sales for businesses. Additionally, only thanks to advertisements, can customers be kept informed about newly-launched products. Therefore, they have more choices to make about their beloved products, contributing to the enhancement of their comforts and standard of living.
However, advertising could cause several disadvantages for customers. No sooner might companies or business exaggerate or even distort the facts related to their products for commercial purposes than the customers can experience feelings of confusion about these items, making them have troubles in selecting the products to their taste. Furthermore, the facts show that the more advertising expenses increase, the higher the product price is. The reason can be that the high cost of advertisements is covered by the selling price of advertised items. As a result, the advertised products can cost more than they should. Finally, when customers cannot resist the temptation of products which are advertised beyond customers’ expectations, there is every likelihood of them purchasing products which may be unnecessary. This trend could be seen as a waste of money.
In conclusion, based on the mentioned explanations above, individuals may gain both considerable benefits and drawbacks through the growing prevalence of advertisements.
4.The society would benefit from a ban on all forms of advertising because it serves no useful purpose, and can even be damaging. Do you agree or disagree? Band 7
It is regularly argued that prohibition of all categories of advertisement, which are thought to be pointless and even detrimental, could generate numerous benefits for the community. Notwithstanding, from my standpoint, social members tend to not only reap advantages but also tolerate demerits from this trend.
On the one hand, it seems undeniable that the ban on multiple kinds of advertisement can be beneficial for consumers. Forbidding advertising is synonymous with the fact that purchasers may not have to pay a remarkable measure of money for advertising services included in product prices. This can serve to reduce consumers’ expenditures for shopping. Moreover, no sooner are numerous advertisements exaggerating the functions, values and qualities of commodities with a view to pressing citizens to purchase their products prohibited than individuals may select their items to fulfill their requirements without being adversely affected by the messages in which the truths related to these goods can have been exaggerated or even distorted.
On the other hand, it would appear that the bar to advertisement services likewise pose untold drawbacks to the community. The first shortcoming could be the joblessness which employees involved in advertising could be confronted with, in all likelihood, giving rise to an increase in the unemployment rate. Another disadvantage might be that this prohibition can keep consumers in ignorance of the latest goods available on the market. Hence, they may be faced with obstacles in searching for and comparing the quality and price concerning the products of the same category before deciding to purchase them.
In conclusion, it is my conviction that banning advertisements can wield both desired and adverse effects on community members.
5.Many people believe that effect of social media on both individuals and society has been negative. To what extent do you agree or disagree. Band 7
Over a period of a decade, we have seen an advancement in the field of science and technology like never before. With the coming of the internet, several sub-branches came into existence. One of them being the social networking sites. Some people believe that websites like Instagram and facebook have had detrimental effects on the individuals as well as society. In my opinion, however, with every change, there do come the good and the bad.
In terms of individual impact, social media sites proved to be both beneficial and boon. The world has shrunk to a point where we can interact with a larger audience. For instance, a person can interact with someone living in British over a project on facebook or skype. Even more, we have become more knowledgeable. One cannot deny the importance of youtube in our lives as an immense help in making us learn new things. However, just like anything over done do have negative impacts, people who browse facebook for simply wiling away time surely may loosen out on many things.
With respect to society, things surely have changed. Comparing them to the past scenario not only limits us it also allows us not to have a better approach towards changes. With the coming of social media, on one hand where people are becoming defragmented there are examples where people have joined hands towards making society a better place.
Overall, in my opinion, with every new change, there do come loopholes. As an individual, it must be our responsibility to make the best of everything present.
6.Over the last few decades, the media has projected the image of women as young and thin. What problems has this caused? What solutions can you suggest to this? Band 7
Media in the changing times has played a very crucial role in defining the decisions made by people. With coming of the digital era and Internet, people are highly dependent on advertisements to make changes in their lifestyle. One such change that has been observed, is that women are now trying to be slim because the notion that things girls are pretty has grounded people’s mind set. This has given rise to a new set of issues.
Firstly, with portraying slick women as the epitome of femininity, the society in large, makes the women question about themselves. This has caused a shift in the minds, from the importance of being healthy to be rather slim, even if it is at the price of becoming unhealthy. Secondly, this has caused a negative psychology among young girls, who if are fat, look upon themselves as inferior to the ones who are slim. The age when children are supposed to learn and explore the world, the hassles of body, could be quite disheartening.
The most effective solution could be making deliberate attempt, to show all women are beautiful. Movies, advertisements or songs, should portray women as human beings, who could be either fat, short, black, slim, fair or whatever, and yet be successful. This method could act as a counteract to the present notion.
Overall, often media forgets the importance it plays in the lives of people, and takes irresponsible steps. But, if the media tries again, the notions present could be changed for better.
7.Some hold the view that ideas and information should be completely open, and there should be no control on what people can read and watch in the media (TV, newspaper, Internet). Do you agree with this view, or do you think that in some circumstances governments should limit the freedom of media? Band 7
We are living in the digital world and media has surely become a part of our lives. It could be watching television for news or comic relief or the characters that we accept as our family members. Or it could be reading newspapers for hours or gaining the insights of the world through Internet. We live in an era, where media influences us the most and in such times allowing media to show anything could prove to be disastrous in more than one ways.
Firstly, providing every information to the viewers could prove to spread negativity. For example-: if the media covers every rape or murder and keep flashing it daily, it could bring in a sense of negativity for people who regularly intake it. Secondly, often there is data that is secret to a country’s government. For example-: a launch of a mission to fight back terrorism. Showing such information in media could lead to the doom of the mission, as the information can easily reach to the trouble makers. Thirdly, every information has different aspects to it. What might seem obvious to one, may not be acceptable to other. In such cases, a piece of information can cause riots or issues that could be easily avoided.
Although restricting media completely can cause a loss of contact between the government and people. The sense of democracy may be lost and it could lead to revolutions that may shake the country’s peace. It has been seen that through media people have been able to raise their voices. For example: When in 2006 the Indian government raised the reservations, people formed groups and stood against it. It was with the help of media that the issue got national audience.
To sum up, it can be said, that media holds a very important position in a nation and it must be made sure that the correct information goes to the country.
8. Advertising has become an inevitable part of our lives. Some people believe that it is a positive aspect of our lives while others are of opposite belief. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Band 7
Advertisements have surely become an important part of our lives. The way consumer buys a product, depends mostly on the advertising model of the company. Although, some people are of the opinion that we have become more aware and are able to take better decisions because of advertisements, others are of the opinion, a clutter has been generated because of it.
Looking at the negative impact, advertisements surely have had many. Firstly, it makes consumers buy things that may be they don’t need. For instance, a woman who sees an advertisement of a new product is more likely to buy it, even if not required. This often causes financial tensions in some cases. Secondly, often times people make fake advertisements. Like, an ad in newspaper saying eat this medicine to become slim in ten days. People tend to buy them and face the consequences.
However, ads are also helpful for the consumer. For example, an ad that tells about the effects of smoking and urges people to stop smoking, is more likely to have a broad effect. On seeing visuals, people are more likely to get affected. Secondly, it allows business people to start a business or a product. Such as, a company that opens a new line of product, can easily make people aware of it using advertisements.
Overall, advertisements, like everything, have both sides i.e. negative as well as positive. In my opinion, we need to be smart to look through if the advertisement is real or fake.
9.Television has the biggest impact on our lives because it is the most popular way of getting information. Do you agree or disagree? Band 7
Technology advancement has changed the way the world perceives things. With the coming of the internet and exponential progress in the hardware area, broadcasting of information has been redefined from radio to newspapers to television, change has happened. Although the internet has now become the primary source of news, the importance of television cannot be denied.
Initially, youtube and other internet channels have made getting what we need faster and more accessible. One can easily watch their favorite episodes online and the coming of web series has moved the youth towards the internet. However, the importance of television comes in when people need to watch things together. For instance, a world cup, most people wait for the time and make a group of people for the live telecast on television.
Furthermore, most people prefer watching the news on BBC, Aaj Tak and other news channels telecasted in television. However, we cannot even deny that the younger generation is getting the required information mostly online. In addition, the children who once were glued to the television screen are now mostly stuck with a mobile phone.
There has been an immense change in the way things are done and we are shifting towards newer technology forms. Television surely has had the most powerful impact on the lives of people. However, in my opinion, the internet is slowly taking over television and other forms of mass media.
