Each child should learn many numeracy and mathematic skills when they started in primary schools, I’m not the exception. While the most impressive math skill that I was taught by my teachers is how to measure the area of shapes.
I had a passion for calculating since my parents were busy with decorating our house when I was 10. I noticed in that process, adults needed know how much paint to buy to cover a wall or how much grass seed they need to sow a lawn. What attracted a 10-year girl was by using some formulas, they could have a precise number.
I asked my teacher and she told me that the simplest and most commonly used area calculations are for squares and rectangles. For example, we could find the area of a rectangle multiply its height by its width. For a square you only need to find the length of one of the sides as each side is the same length and then multiply this by itself to find the area. This is the same as saying length squared（length2 ）.
Maybe this skill doesn’t seem complex enough for high-school math.Nevertheless, it’s some kind of real-world math for daily life. When we design our house or companies, such formula would be a simple but correct method to know how much cost will be spent on buying the wallpaper and curtain. What’s more, the size of furniture also be decided by the reserved space we calculated to maintain a sense of balance in vision and space. Therefore, the basic math skills such as measuring areas is an enlightenment in aesthetics and a method of making budget in life.
